How term-time pay is worked out

Term-time only staff are paid for the weeks they work plus the holiday they are entitled to, which they take during school holidays. The total is spread over 12 months. The formula is:

Actual salary = full-time salary × (your hours ÷ 37) × (paid weeks ÷ 52.143)

Schools usually work 39 weeks a year. Paid holiday, including bank holidays, adds several more, so most term-time staff are paid for between about 44 and 46 weeks. Longer service usually means more holiday, so your paid weeks can go up over time.

Example

A school staff member on SCP 9 (£28,153 full time), working 30 hours a week and paid for 45.6 weeks, gets £19,962 a year. After tax, National Insurance and the LGPS that is £1,414 a month, paid every month including the summer holiday.

Common questions

How many weeks are term-time staff paid for?

Usually around 44 to 46 weeks: 39 working weeks plus paid holiday and bank holidays. Your school or council sets the exact number, often with more weeks after five years’ service.

Is term-time pay spread over 12 months?

Yes, almost always. Your yearly pay is divided into 12 equal payments so you are paid during the holidays.

Do term-time staff pay into the LGPS?

Yes, they can join like anyone else. The contribution rate is set on your actual pay, so many term-time staff pay one of the lower rates.
