Second job on code BR. Your tax-free allowance is used by your main job, so the second job pays 20% tax on every pound.

National Insurance is worked out separately for each job, so you pay £720 a year less than if it were all one job.

Worked examples

  • £24,000 main job + £9,000 second job: the second job is on code BR and pays £1,800 tax but no NI. Together you take home about £2,333 a month, £60 more than one job paying £33,000, because NI is worked out per job.
  • £8,000 + £9,000: the main job leaves £4,570 of your allowance unused. With it split (codes 800L and 457L) the second job pays £886 tax a year instead of £1,800.

Common questions

Why is my second job taxed so much?

Your £12,570 tax-free allowance usually goes to your main job, so a second job gets tax code BR: 20% on every pound. It isn’t extra tax. It’s the tax you’d pay anyway on that income.

Can I split my tax-free allowance between two jobs?

Yes, if your main job pays less than £12,570. Ask HMRC to move the unused part to your second job, through your HMRC online account or by phone. Otherwise you may overpay and have to claim it back.

Do I pay National Insurance on both jobs?

Each job is looked at separately. You only pay NI in a job once it pays more than £242 a week, so a small second job often has no NI at all.

Is student loan taken from both jobs?

Yes, each employer checks your pay against the threshold separately. If your total income is over the threshold but neither job is, you may need to repay the difference through Self Assessment.
